Rome, 7 oktober 2021 - Bij het Colosseum in Rome is vanmiddag een gebedsmanifestatie gehouden in het kader van een interreligieuze vredesconferentie (6 en 7 oktober), georganiseerd door de Gemeenschap van Sant'Egidio. Paus Franciscus ging daarbij voor in het gebed samen met hoofden van andere kerken en leiders van andere godsdiensten.
Tijdens de bijeenkomst werden ook diverse toespraken gehouden, door onder anderen de Duitse bondskanselier Angela Merkel en Sabera Ahmadi, een Afghaanse vluchteling.
Ook de paus sprak de aanwezigen bij het beroemde antieke amfitheater toe. Hij zei onder meer dat de coronapandemie de mensheid heeft laten zien dat we niet gezond kunnen blijven in een wereld die ziek is.
“De laatste tijd hebben velen de ziekte van de vergetelheid opgelopen, de vergetelheid van God en van onze broeders en zusters. Dit heeft geleid tot ongebreideld individualisme en het verlangen naar zelfvoorziening, dat is overgelopen in onverzadigbare hebzucht. De aarde die wij bewonen draagt hiervan de littekens, terwijl de lucht die wij inademen rijk is aan gifstoffen maar arm aan solidariteit.”
“Zo hebben wij de vervuiling van ons hart over de schepping uitgestort. In dit klimaat van achteruitgang is het bemoedigend te bedenken dat dezelfde zorgen en verplichtingen steeds meer het gedeelde patrimonium worden van vele religies.”
Gebed en actie kunnen volgens Franciscus de loop van de geschiedenis veranderen. “Broeders en zusters, wees moedig! Voor ons ligt een visie, dezelfde visie die door zoveel jonge mensen en mannen en vrouwen van goede wil wordt gedeeld: de aarde als een gemeenschappelijk huis, waarin volkeren als broeders en zusters wonen. Ja, laten we dromen van religies als zusters en volkeren als broeders!”
